House. Dated 1592. Built for the Stebbings family. Timber framed with
colourwashed render and plaintiled roof, probably originally thatched. L-
shaped plan. Two storeys and attic. 3-cell baffle-entry with later cross-
wing. Entrance front: projecting at far right a later C17 wing which has a
½-glazed door to the ground floor at right and a 3-light window to the
left. Two-light first floor window and a cross-window to the attic. The
left hand flank of the wing has a 2-light ground floor window and a cross-
window to the first floor. Recessed and at left of the wing is the main
axial range. This has a blocked doorway at left of centre below the stack
now replaced by a single-light window but retaining the later C19/early C19
pediment with Greek key motif. To right of this at ground floor level is
one 2-light C19 casement and to the first floor is a single-light casement
at far left and 2-light C19 casement to far right, and ovolo moulded
windows, of 3 lights below the stack, and of 5 lights at left of this and
of 7 lights at right and 5 lights to far right. To the ridge at left of
centre to a massive axial chimney stack with brick base in which is set the
datestone with the initials G.S and sawtoothed flues with ball ornament
covered in cement render and lacking their caps. Further axial stack to
the juncture of the axial range and the wing. Left hand gable end: blank
with a jettied gable which has a moulded bressumer. Right hand side:
outshut to the ground floor at left and a 3-light ground floor window to
the right and a 3-light first floor window at right. Rear: projecting wing
at left which has 2-light ground and first floor windows. The axial range
at right of this has C20 fenestration including a gabled ground floor porch
to left of centre with a plank door and at left of this a 2-light casement
and to right a 3-light and a 5-light and three 3-light casements. Directly
below the stack is one 3-light C17 ovolo-moulded window to the upper wall.
Interior: the present drawing room has chamfered wall posts with
decoratively carved jowls supporting ovolo-moulded beams with stepped
lamb's tongue end stops and quirks to the edges of these ovolo mouldings
and a central convex moulding to the underside of the beams. The wall
plates have similar mouldings. The present hall has close studded walling
and a fireplace with canted inner corners and chamfered ashlar quoins to
the arch and a chamfered bressumer with die-out end stops. Similar
fireplace with lamb's tongue end stops to the drawing room. Winder
staircase leading up from the lobby of the baffle-entry plan. One first
floor room has a C17 ceiling divided into 4 equal compartments by ceiling
beams and the compartments carry richly moulded plaster panels having
either a central diamond or roundel with quadrants or diagonally-cut
rectangles to the corners. These corner compartments all show winged
cherubs heads and other motifs are roses, lillies and fleurs de lys.
Jowled wall posts and close studding to the other first floor rooms.
