Education Department and front wall

Library and museum, now offices. 1886. By J. Johnson. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings, slate roof. Two storeys, five bays. Faceted plinth and top panelled frieze,
cornice and parapet with finials; flat pilasters to ends and flanking first bay. Ground floor windows are paired, with round tympana with roundels and foliage, archivolts and imposts. First bay entrance is round headed with key, consoled entablature with panel above inscribed "FREE LIBRARY/AND/MUSEUM" and date in segmental pediment. First floor first bay round-headed window has open pediment, other bays have rectangular panels. Parapet over first bay has roundel with arms supporting two seated figures; pavilion roof.

Low front wall with granite bollards supporting lamp standards with C20 lamps and cast iron bollards in form of light houses supporting chains.
