Details

SWALCLIFFE MAIN ROAD SP3737 (South side) 7/82 Stable block at Swalcliffe 08/12/55 Park - II Stable block. C17. C18/C19 extension and alteration. Coursed regular ironstone rubble to sides and rear. Main elevation ashlar. Hipped slate roof 2 rendered brick stacks to left part. 2-unit C17 part on right. 3-unit later part on left. Single storey plus attic throughout. C17 part: Blocked 4- centred, wide door had hood mould and label stops. To left a 4-light stone mullioned window with hood mould and label stops. To right a 4-light and 2-light window with stone surrounds and inserted casements. Both have hood moulds with label stops. 4 windows to attic storey: 2- and 3-light stone mullions; one has a hood mould with label stops. C18/C19 part on left: 2 wide arched stable doorways in centre of elevation have inserted C20 doors. To left a blocked, keystoned dear and 2-light window. To right a 2-light stone mullioned window. 4 windows to attic floor: 2 on left have stone surrounds and oculi. To right a 2-light casement with lead cames and a single light window. Stone mounting block to left of blocked doorway in C17 part. Interior not inspected. (Buildings of England : Oxfordshire, 1974, p.798).
