TM 37 NE WISSETT MILL ROAD
5/64 Millcroft -
- II
House. Early C17, with remains of earlier core; C19 exterior. 1½ storeys. Timber-framed, encased in mid C19 red brick, including a single storey lean-to along the rear added at the same time; thatch. An extension along part of the south side has the roof-slope running into the main roof. An internal chimney-stack with a large plain shaft of old red brick. 2-light and 3-light casement windows with a single bar to lights; one eyebrow dormer. C20 panelled and battened door. Framing exposed inside: no middle rail; reversed braces at the corners. The ceilings, with the joist ends resting on clamps, give the impression of being at least partly inserted: plain chamfered joists, deep main beams. An additional wallplate has been added along part of the rear wall; a section of the earlier plate has housings for diamond mullions, and traces of smoke-blackening, and part of the studding has been replaced. The chimney-stack has 2 back-to-back hearths on the ground floor with open fireplaces, plain lintels, and good original brickwork. Roof inaccessible. A large C20 extension at the east side is not of special interest.
