3/68 No 27 (Portwell House) (formerly listed as part 10.11.52 of Crown Hotel)

GV II

Early C17 stone range originally probably part of Crown Hotel, roughcast and much altered in C18. V-plan with narrow south front and diverging rear wings, one facing west to Market Place, other east to Crown courtyard. 2-storey and attic with steep stone tiled roofs. 2 large stone chimney bases, one on ridge and one at north end of east range. Truncated stone stacks on ridge and north end of west range. Roughcast walls with painted angle quoins and flat window surrounds to south and east fronts. Glazing bar sash windows. Parapet. South front, basement door, 3-window floor above with broader centre window, 2-window first floor. East front: 3 flat dormers, 5-window range. 7 windows to ground floor, 2 formerly doors. Raised plinth all round. West range: 2-storey on raised ground floor, slate roof, 5-window range, originally sash windows, some replaced by casements. North end 2-window range retains original sash windows, broad above and narrow to ground floor. Ground and first floor rooms in this section retain mid C18 fielded panelling.
