II

House, used as an hotel in C19 when it was known as Oakenshaw Railway Hotel, now house. Late C18 with mid C19 addition to rear. Well-coursed punch-dressed stone, brown/red brick in English garden wall bond to rear of which is attached C19 brick extension. Stone slate roof, asbestos to rear range. 3 storeys. 3-bay symmetrical facade. Doorway with monolithic jambs has open gabled porch which may be earlier and re-used; this has channelled quoin pilasters, semicircular-arch with imposts and dropped keystone, triangular pediment. Above and to either side windows with plain stone surrounds retain original 20-pane sashes to ground floor and 16-pane sashes above. Carried over central bay is pedimented gable. Hipped roof. Rear has brick service range with added 2-storey lean-to containing doorway in side wall. Segmental-arched window to each floor. 3rd floor has 2 square-headed windows. Lean-to roof against main house with coped 1/2 gable. 2 brick stacks in a lateral position at junction of the 2 ranges. Left-hand return has 2-storey C19 canted bay window with sill bands, each face having a sash.

Interior: painted oak-panelled entrance hall has archway with fluted Ionic pilasters leading to a dog-leg staircase (boxed in) with swept handrail. Doorways to either side have moulded architraves, that to left has a 6-panel door leading to the original oak-panelled dining-room which has an elaborate carved fireplace (not original).
