ENSTONE CHARLBURY ROAD SP3624-3724 (West side) Neat Enstone 15/41 Neat Cottage
II
House. Probably C17 and early C18, altered C19 and C20. Limestone rubble with wooden lintels and some ashlar dressings; Welsh-slate roof with stone-and-brick stacks. 3-unit plan with rear wing and outshut. 2 storeys plus attic. Irregular 3-window front has a recessed central section containing the doorway, to extreme right, and a 2-light casement to left of it, both with old stop-chamfered lintels; a 2-light first-floor casement in the left section has a similar lintel. Other casements have later plain lintels, including a large window in the right section which adjoins a secondary entrance and was probably a shop window. Cellar beneath the left section has a 2-light stone-mullioned window. Steep-pitched roof has gable parapets bearing stacks, and has a third stack to left of the middle section. Right gable wall includes a shallow projection. Centrally-placed rear wing also has a gable parapet, and adjoins an outshut. Interior: right section has a fine early/mid-C17 cross beam with elaborate chamfer stops, a mutilated fireplace with adjoining C17 cupboards hung on leather hinges, and a large open chamber fireplace. Middle section is probably mainly mid/late C17 and has a large open fireplace, chamfered joists and beam, an ovolo-moulded 2-light wood-mullioned window with lattice glazing (now internal), and a dogleg stair with heavy turned balusters, now incorporated into the outshut. Left section and rear wing are probably early C18 and retain a roof truss and some butt purlins. Roof is largely C19. Central section may be on the site of an earlier hall and could incorporate some early masonry.
