Details
ALCESTER HENLEY STREET SP0857 (West side) 4/59 No.19 01/02/67 GV II
House. Mid C14. (G.E. Saville); altered and heightened C16/early C17; additions and alterations C19 and late C20. Timber framed; some cruck construction surviving, and small framing with plaster and whitewashed brick infill, and whitewashed brick. 2-unit through passage plan, extended to L-plan by projecting gabled addition on left. 2 storeys; 2-window range. Late C20 six-panelled door. C19 iron casements with glazing bars. Small C19 canted bay on right. Right return side has heavy jowled post. Ground floor underbuilt in whitewashed brick, with exposed large framing above. Late C20 windows. To rear exposed framing, partly in C18 brick. Large brick external stack. Late C20 single storey timber framed wing, replacing similar earlier wing. Interior: 2 pairs of crucks, with yoked apex point and notch for ridge, exposed on both floors. Exposed timber framing and ceiling beams. Open fireplace with bressumer. Winder stairs. C16/C17 trenched purlin roof above crucks. Said to have been a hall house with 3 or 4 pairs of crucks, and with upper storey inserted later. (Saville, G.E., A Very Old House, Local Past, 1984, p.5).
