5/181 Old Harden Grange 9.8.66 (formerly listed as St. Ives(Research Institute and 6 flats)) GV II
House. Early-mid C17. Large coarsed gritstone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys L-shaped with 2-cell block to left of entrance bay. All are double-chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmoulds over ground- floor windows. 1st cell has 3-light windows altered to 2-lights with 2-lights above. 2nd cell has 6-light window with king mullion altered to 4-wide lights with 3-lights above. 2-light window to 1st floor partly obscured by entrance bay at right angles: doorway with Tudor-arched lintel flanked by Doric columns with entablature, cornice and much weathered heraldic shield. The lintel has inscription (now much weathered) which reads :
"If thou a house shalt finde Built to thy mynde And that without thy cost Serve thou the more God and the poore And then thy labour is not loste"
Coped gables with kneelers and stacks, that to left gable of 1st cell external another to gable of entrance wing. Attached to left- hand return wall is short wall with doorway set in it with cyma- moulded surround the lintel dated 1701. This forms a link to The Cottage (q.v.).
