Vale Mills (oldest part only)
II
Cotton mill. Early C19. For John Greenwood and his Son (Hodgson, p219).
Coursed millstone grit, graduated Westmorland slate roof. 'T'-shaped block, the
trunk 3-storeyed, spanning the river and road, with an office block in the mill
yard at its head (south end) and 2-storeyed ranges running off to west and east.
The 3-storeyed range has a quoined, shouldered arch across the road, and a lower,
segmental arch with rusticated voussoirs and spandrels across river. Many
small-paned windows with stone lintels and continuous cill bands. Ashlar coping.
The Greenwoods also built here a row of cottages and a school (Hodgson, p 219).
They also worked at Airworth Mill, Aireworth Road (qv) (Ibid 218).
J Hodgson, Textile Manufacture in Keighley, 1879.
