Public house and hotel, now public house. Late C19 incorporating parts of an earlier building. Red brick in English garden wall bond, red sandstone dressings, slate roof with red ridge tiles. Double-pile plan with earlier block set back and attached to left. 4 corbelled chimneys, 4 bays, full-height octagonal gabled bays at each side flank entrance with painted stone architrave and a single-storey octagonal bay, 2 pairs of sash windows above and a wooden dentillated cornice at first floor level. Gables have mock timber framing, barge boards and finials. Deep bracketed eaves cornice, moulded red terracotta frieze and sandstone plaques with the words `Plough' and `Hotel'. Windows are sashed throughout, those at first floor level has upper sashes and margin lights. At ground floor some windows retain etched and cut glass with the words `Bar' and `Plough Hotel'. Right hand return elevation has off-centre entrance to outdoor department with heavy sandstone canopy supported by carved stone brackets. Interior retains plan dating from the late C19 rebuilding in virtually unaltered state. Vestibule with door to right of vault, ahead doube swing doors with decorative glazing lead to hall with black and white mosaic floor of geometric design, dado of dark green glazed tiles with decorative panels in pale blue and cream which continues up stairwell. Bar hatches to right are vertically hung sliding sashes with margin lights and coloured and textured glass. 2 rooms to left have doors with paired glazed panels, lobby screens, and fixed upholstered seating with bell-pushes above; of these front room has plaster cornice and frieze with swags. Vault has fixed bench seating with matchboard backs, plaster cornice and frieze as before, ornate lobby screen and heavy panelled wooden bar with foliated consoles. Modern glass rack above, original ornate bar-back of debased Jacobean style with mirrors. Door from vault to outdoor department which has tiled dado as before, and hatch as before with gas light fitting above. Room to rear altered. First floor meeting room has original fireplaces. Cellars: 3 brick barrel vault cellars which relate to an earlier building, fourth cellar with transverse brick jack arches dates from rebuilding. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached altered block of early C19 character has brick boiler and stone sink. HISTORICAL NOTE: The building is on site of a beerhouse which was licensed in 1823 and the cellars, outbuilding and part of back wall are of early C19 character and probably relate to this.
