SJ8498SE DALE STREET 698-1/29/95 (East side) 10/11/72 Entrance archway and lodge to yard of the Rochdale Canal Company
GV II
Entrance archway to former terminus of Rochdale and Ashton Canals. 1822 (according to former list). Rusticated sandstone ashlar. Screen wall approx. 10m long and approx. 8m high, with small lodge attached to rear of north end. Gothick style. The screen wall has a large round-headed archway in the centre, the jambs protected by tapered cast-iron bollards, a 12-pane sashed wndow to left with a keyed lintel, a blocked former doorway to the right, a full-width rectangular panel near the top, with a moulded surround, and a plain frieze, moulded cornice and embattled parapet. The attached lodge has a gate rebate in the side wall, a canted corner with a 12-pane sashed window, a short rear wall with a chamfered doorway, and a moulded cornice and unusual embattled parapet with circle upstands. Various large signboards attached to front at time of survey.
