GV II
House, now local authority offices, with forecourt walls and piers. c1840 with c1930 addition on King Street front. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar plinth, quoins and dressings; slate roof with ashlar parapet and stone and rendered chimneys. C20 addition in C18 style. 2 storeys; 5-window range and 2+2+1-window range on right return. Steps up to 6-panel door and patterned overlight in plain stone surround with cornice. Sashes with glazing bars in plain stone surrounds. High roof parapet on eaves blocks. Low-pitched hipped roof has 2 long ridge chimneys, the left rendered and the right stone, with bands and tapered square yellow pots. Right return to King Street: the first build has 2 windows flanking the principal office entrance with panelled door under patterned overlight in Greek Doric doorcase of attached columns with entablature and blocking course. c1930 build to right is 2 storeys, 2-window, range with quoins; plain stone surrounds to central door and flanking sashes with glazing bars; roof has high parapet, raised over central carved panel with Council coat of arms. At right, lower wide bay with quoins has central well-cut Venetian window with keyed head, and plain sill apron. Eaves band stepped over window. INTERIOR: not inspected. Walls attached enclose forecourt and path from door to Galgate and have sloped stone coping, with chamfered coping to square piers; railings removed. HISTORY: plaque attached to No.45 says that this was the birthplace of Cecil Northcote Parkinson, the author who formulated `Parkinson's Law'.
