Mansion now school. c1865 with later additions. For JT Smith. Coursed red sandstone with ashlar dressings, graduated slate roof. 2 storeys and attic, 3x3 bays with former service rooms in 2-storey, 2-bay, twin-roofed wing on right and with 1-storey porch in deep projection to front left. Battered plinth rises to ground floor sill band; ground-floor windows mostly 4-pane sashes beneath dichromatic segmental arches; 1st-floor sill band to 2-light windows with plain sashes, colonnette mullions and cornices beneath recessed panels with pointed relieving arches; iron rails fixed to the sill bands. Entrance front: porch has 6-panel door under moulded segmental arch with hoodmould; parapet with rope mould, blank shield, quatrefoils and roll-moulded copings; flat roof. Main range has projecting central tower with arched 3-light window under hoodmould with head-carved stop; 3-light window to 1st floor has hoodmould which rises over a carved head and continues on each return over single-light windows; corbel table to rope-moulded parapet; pyramidal roof with colour-banded slates, lucarnes and metal finial. Flanking bays are as per general details; ovolo-moulded eaves band beneath moulded cast-iron gutter; hipped roof with roll-moulded ridges and metal finials; dormers to bays 1 & 3 each with two 4-pane casements under hipped roof with metal finial. Ashlar stacks on the side ridges have offsets and corbelled caps. Service wing set back on right is much plainer and has hipped right ends to its roofs with tower rising between having hipped saddleback roof. Rear: as per general details; 3 dormers as front, their casements altered. Left return: bay 1 is a 2-storey canted bay-window under hipped projection of main roof; the window details as rest. Bay 3 has 1-storey, ashlar bay-window of 4x2 lights with narrow sashes, joggled arches and pierced parapet. 2 roof dormers. INTERIOR: patterned tile floor to the entrance hall; plaster wall panels and 6-panel pine doors in roll-moulded architraves. Staircase with cast-iron balustrade, wreathed mahogany handrail; 3-bay arcade on the landing and panelled ceiling with margin-glazed skylight. Several rooms (now classrooms) retain original fireplaces, plaster cornices and moulded ceilings. JT Smith was manager of the Barrow Haematite Iron and Steel Company.
