TEWKESBURY
HIGH STREET (East side)
Nos.138 and 139
04/03/52
GV
II
Pair of houses in row, one with shop under. Early C18. Flemish bond brickwork with painted stone dressings, tile roof, brick stacks. Three storeys, attic and basement, 2+2-windowed. One early C18 gabled two-light dormer to 138, then all 12-pane sashes in moulded face boxes, under brick voussoirs with plain keystones (unusual in Tewkesbury) on stone cills. At the rear there is a C20 dormer above two 12-pane sash window and a large 16-pane sash window; there is also a very large stack.
No. 138 has a large four-pane sash to the right, above a cellar grille, then to the left a six-pane flush door under a margin-bar transom-light, in fluted pilasters, and, far left, in fluted incised pilasters, a glazed door under an elliptical fanlight with radial bars; all this beneath a moulded cornice.
No. 139 has a late C20 shop front. At each end and in the centre are channelled pilasters through first and second floors, with a plain band above the ground floor cornice and above the first floor windows. The moulded stone eaves carries concealed guttering. Central ridge stack. At the rear there is a C19 brick wing in three storeys, with two-light casements at second floor and 16-pane sashes to V-joint lintels at first floor, above a flat-roofed addition.
INTERIOR not inspected.
This is a very handsome pair of houses, little changed externally, a relatively rare example in Tewkesbury of complete rebuilding rather than a fashionable refacing to older fabric.
