Entrance lodges and gates to Bowes Museum (qv). c1885. By J Pellechet; builder JE Watson of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. For John Bowes. Sandstone ashlar, Lakeland slate roofs and ashlar chimneys; ashlar piers and walls with wrought-iron railings and gates. One-storey, 3-window, lodges flank entrance with central vehicle and side pedestrian gates. French Baroque style. EXTERIOR: lodges have high pecked plinths; channelled rustication with cross-casement windows, rustication continuing along outer voussoirs; triple keys rise to balustraded roof parapet. Low-pitched roofs have chimneys at front and rear with swept coping. Inner returns towards carriageway have central double 6-panel doors and 2 windows; 2 pairs of windows in rear. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: low walls with wide chamfered coping continue from plinths of lodges and are interrupted by squared piers, all with channelled rustication, to pedestrian and vehicle gates. Piers have cornice and blocking course, the central pair taller with elaborate wrought-iron lamp finials. Lamps are octagonal with high dome and raised cone-and-spike tops. Railings with shaped heads are set on rail except for panel principals and rear stays set into walls. Spike dogbars to railings and gates. Pedestrian gates have scrolled cresting. Vehicle gates tall, with serpentine heads with richly designed and gilded cresting rising to delicate top panel. Entrance gates listed 22.02.73. (Buildings of England: Pevsner: County Durham: Harmondsworth: 1983-: 88).
