Pair of houses, formerly part of larger house. 1760 with C19 alterations. Rough render with ashlar dressings; roof of stone slates and Welsh slate with stone ridge and gable copings and rendered chimneys. 2 storeys; 4-window range, with outer gabled bays; left gable is No.59A. 6-panel doors at right of left gable and under third window, the left with overlight in keyed round-headed surround with imposts, the right in plain stone surround with hood. Paired C19 windows on ground and first floors in left gable have 8-pane sashes, stop-chamfered stone mullions and flat stone lintels, and projecting stone sills. Single 12-pane sash in gable peak has flat stone lintel and projecting stone sill. Lower 2-bay central section has stone-mullioned canted bay window with low-pitched hipped roof at left; first-floor 18-pane sashes with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills above that and door, and keyed round-arched stair sash window at right with imposts and arched glazing bars. Right gabled bay, lower than the left gable, has canted stone bay with glazing bars and hipped roof, and 18-pane sash above. Left gable has stone coping on moulded kneelers; low-pitched right gable has stone coping, moulded kneelers, and ball finial. Roof has tall, wide, rendered end stacks. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: this was part of the home of William Hutchinson, historian of County Durham, in the C18.
