Savings bank, now museum. 1845. By Philip Sambell for the
Trustees of the Truro Savings Bank. Granite ashlar front,
asbestos slate roof with central pediment and parapet. Large
rectangular plan, plus wings at sides and rear, with central
entrance hall leading to a very large stair hall with an
imperial stair to balcony on all sides. Classical style. 2
storeys; symmetrical 5-window front. Plinth; articulated by
giant Ionic pilasters dividing bays with 3 central bays broken
slightly forward and surmounted by triangular pediment;
central distyle Doric porch with Doric entablature and central
elliptical-arched doorway with fanlight, C20 door; other
openings with shallow elliptical arches over C20 horned
sashes: those to first floor with glazing bars. INTERIOR:
complete and has many interesting features including large
central hall lit by glazed roof, with key-pattern ventilator,
over segmental ribs with ceiling cornices with modillions;
imperial stair to gallery on large moulded brackets, moulded
architraves and rear lunette over pairs of Ionic columns, also
panelled ceilings with moulded ribs to side galleries. A
competent classical composition by this notable Truro
architect.
