SJ3188 PARK ROAD SOUTH 789-1/11/133 (North side) 28/03/74 Gothic Lodge, gate piers and railings (Formerly Listed as: BIRKENHEAD PARK Entrance gateway consisting of Gothic Lodge, and 5 gatepiers)

Lodge to Birkenhead Park. c1843-47. By Lewis Hornblower and John Robertson for Sir Joseph Paxton. Coursed and squared sandstone with Welsh slate roof. Gothic style, 2 storeys with main range facing street, and 2 wings forming an L-plan range behind. Central entrance to symmetrical 3-window main range with 2-centred arched doorway in gabled porch, flanked by stone mullioned windows in ashlar dressed architraves, and 3 gabled dormer windows above. Canted bay on right-hand gable wall, with parapet, and added canted bay to left gable. Rear octagonal clustered stacks. Gate piers and railings to garden, stone gate piers with incised panels and shallow pyramidal caps. Cast-iron railings with spear head principal posts at intervals, with scrolled braces. Forms part of the original development of Birkenhead Park.
