GV II

Lodge. c1861 with later extension. Coursed, squared Pennant rubble with limestone ashlar dressings and slate roof. Single-depth, T-shaped plan. 2 storeys; 2-window range. Rusticated quoin strips to earlier corner block, rubble plinth, plat band and ashlar ridge stacks linked by an arch, with cornices; deep eaves and verges. Openings have keyed, round-arched heads ending in ovolo moulds, and flat jambs; segmental heads to the extension windows. Door with fanlight to the left, single-light ground-floor window, similar above door and 2-light projecting eaves dormer to the left, on brackets. Left return has a 3-light canted ground-floor bay, with a 3-light window above. 2-light ground- and first-floor windows to the left. 4/4 sash windows. INTERIOR not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: Glenside Hospital (qv) was built as Stapleton Lunatic Asylum. (Building News: London: 1891-: APRIL).
