ST5973NW BRUNSWICK SQUARE, St Paul 901-1/6/1880 (East side) 08/01/59 Nos.7-12 (Consecutive) and area railings

GV II

Terrace of 6 houses. 1784. Possibly by William Paty. Brick with limestone dressings, brick stacks and a pantile mansard roof. Mid Georgian style. 3 storeys, basement and attic; 18-window range. A formal composition with projecting 4-storey end blocks, first-floor plat band and modillion cornice; doorcases have console pediments over keyed semicircular arches with plate-glass fanlights, paired, in the middle, on Nos 9 & 10, to the outer sides of Nos 8 & 11, and in the side elevations of the end houses. Each house has 3 windows with 5 stepped voussoirs to sashes with margin bars, and 2 dormers, and the taller end houses have pilasters above the cornice between the brick-arched windows; end elevations have Gibbs surrounds to central, semicircular-arched doorways and windows. INTERIOR: most have been completely restored with the loss of most period details. Unrestored No.12 has a large hall with square, open-well stair with ramped rails and a modillion cornice. No.8, dogleg stair with curtail step, ramped rail, semicircular hall arch with fluted reveals and 6-panel shutters. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: cast-iron railings to open basement areas.
