GV II

Pair of attached houses. Mid C19. Limestone ashlar with rendered sides, ashlar ridge and end stacks with one concrete tile and one slate roof. Double-depth plan. Italianate style. 2 storeys and basement; 4-window range. A symmetrical pair has a projecting centre with 2 shallow bays with timber pediments, and entrances in the sides. Faceted quoins, banded rustication to the centre below a moulded plat band, frieze and overhanging eaves cornice, which run into the pediments. Doorways have keyed semicircular arches with pilasters to an entablature and segmental pediment, and 2-leaf 6-panel doors; toward the rear are tall stained-glass stair windows. The central bays have tripartite windows with keyed semicircular heads, larger to the middle, and sashes with curved glazing bars; first-floor windows have keyed architraves over a panel, and 6/6-pane sashes; similar outer windows, with a keyed segmental pediment on the ground floor. Stacks have corbelled cornices. INTERIOR: No.6, right-hand entrance hall with a modillion cornice with vine leaves, an open-well stair with turned balusters and curtail with a wreathed rail; 4-panel door and 4-panel shutters, marble fireplace with consoles. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Nos 4-14 (qv) have common plans and interiors, and share many external details.
