Pair of attached houses. c1892. By Henry Dare Bryan. Snecked limestone rubble with limestone and brick dressings, brick second floor, brick ridge and exterior stacks and a plain tile and concrete tile hipped and gabled roof. Double-depth plan. Queen Anne style. Each of 3 storeys; 2-window range. A symmetrical pair has gables projecting from the ends, side entrances, stone-framed ground-floor mullion and transom casements, and first-floor mullion 9/1-pane sashes. Doorways have mullion overlights beneath a semicircular-arched cornice and brick relieving arch, and panelled 2-leaf doors with a central raised diamond; both have been moved towards the rear and the doorway infilled. Ground-floor bays to the gables have 4 lights beneath a bracketed canopy, and in between are 3-light windows with a dentil cornice; first-floor 3-light windows to the gables with 2-light windows between with shallow brick and stone relieving arches; second storey has paired sashes in the gable beneath a corbel table and timber-framed gable, and half dormers between with timber cross windows. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front garden walls and piers with ball finials. The early part of a development influenced by Norman Shaw's Bedford Park, 1881.
