ST5672NE DOWRY SQUARE, Hotwells 901-1/13/1419 (West side) 08/01/59 No.2 and attached front basement railings (Formerly Listed as: DOWRY SQUARE No.2)
GV II
Attached house. c1780. Stucco with limestone dressings, party wall stacks and slate mansard roof. Double-depth plan. Late Georgian style. 3 storeys, attic and basement; 4-window range. Parapeted front has a right-hand doorway with oval panels to jambs and lintel with 3 thick reeds and corner roundels, a thin reeded canopy, and a 6-panel door with glazed top panels. Horned 6/6-pane sashes, taller on the first floor with steel basket balconies. 2 dormers with 4/4-pane sashes. A marble panel to the door lintel is inscribed SIR ROBERT YOUNG, SURGEON & c. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached wrought-iron spear-headed front area and entrance railings and gate with urn finials. Dowry Square was laid out by Tully in 1720, and building continued until 1750. Each side had a 5-window middle house and outer 3-window ones, of brick, now altered and mostly rendered, to various designs.
