SY6871 EASTON STREET, Easton 969-1/4/45 (East side) Nos.42 AND 44

II

Two houses in row. Early C18; No 44 heightened late C19. Good squared and dressed stone block, slate roof. Two-unit central-entry plan to No 42 and smaller 2-unit plan with left-hand entry to No 44. No 42 is lower than adjoining houses, and with steeper roof pitch. Front is 2 storeys, 2-windowed. At first floor are two paired 4-pane sashes to wood mullions, above one similar but larger, left, and a 4-pane, right, and all set towards right of facade, Near centre is plank door in plain opening. Stone stack, left, and remains of good stone stack with capping built in to adjoining property to right. Wing to back with pent roof. The scale and layout of this house suggests that it may be one of the earliest structures in this street. No 44 of 3 storeys, one-windowed. Gabled porch on right of mid C20 windows, that on first floor with chamfered to former mullioned window. Two plate-glass sashes to late C19 upper storey. Rendered right end stack. Interiors not inspected but probably of interest. (Royal Commission on Historical Monuments: Dorset: London: 1970-: 255).
