Possibly mediaeval basement said to represent part of the town's defences,
or conversely the substructure to the Bishop (of Durham)'s Palace. 2 upper
floors C18. Crow stepped gable end to street. Brick built over substantial
rib vaulted basement which formerly extended further east. 3 storeys, 1 window
to street. Semi-circular glzing bar sash window on 2nd floor. Return to east
has brick modillion cornice and 3 arched openings to ground floor. Door to
basement from street has a grille. Crow stepped gable to rear of former stable
at rear of Prospect House.
