5/57 Gateway to Roman Catholic Church - of St. Mary GV II

Gateway arch, dated 1912. Sandstone. Between buttressed piers a wide 4-centred arch with carved spandrels, bearing a high stepped coping which has in the centre a cinquefoil-headed niche with a statue of Our Lady of Dolours; flanking this are blind traceried panels with Gothick lettering below the sills; on the piers flanking the arch are niches with open cinquefoil tracery in the heads containing statues carrying the sacraments. Rear is similar, but has only the central niche, which contains a statue of a bishop.
