3/140 Furze Cottage -
GV II
Cottage. Probably C18 with C19 extension. The main cottage is plastered cob on stone rubble footings, the extension is painted stone rubble with some brick; thatch roof, interlocking tile to the extension. L-shaped cottage. The main block faces north and has a 2-room plan with right(west) end projecting stack. 1-room rear block projects to rear of left end with inner lateral stack. Lower addition on left of main block on the same axis. Main cottage is 2 storeys, the extension has 1 storey with attics. Cottage has a nearly symmetrical 2-window front of C19 and C20 casements without glazing bars. The ground floor windows were given diamond-pane leaded glass circa 1970 and the first floor windows have thatch eyebrows over. The left ground floor window may be blocking the original door. The roof is hipped to right, gable-ended to left and rear block roof is hipped. The main door is at the right end of the extension. It is C20 and flanked by narrow side lights. This door is in the blocking of an earlier opening. There are 2 C20 casements to left and first floor dormer over the door, none with glazing bars. This roof is gable-ended and the end has C20 garage doors. Interior has plain carpentry detail where exposed such as the braced frame of slender scantling and brick nogging between the 2 rooms of the main cottage.
