Details

OTTERTON FORE STREET (north side), SY 0885 Otterton 7/147 Leacroft Cottage and Spinning - Wheel Cottage GV II 2 cottages. Probably late C18 - early C19, modernised in late C19 and again circa 1970. Plastered walls, probably cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble or brick stack topped with C19 brick; thatch roof. Plastered brick outshots with slate roof. Pair of contemporary 2-room plan cottages facing south-east onto Fore Street, Leacroft Cottage on the left (south-west) and spinning Wheel Cottage on the right (north-east). Cottages have similar plans, each a mirror of the other each side of axial stack in party wall which serves back-to-back fireplaces. Behind the inner rooms are probably secondary 2-storey outshots. Although each cottage has a 2-window front of C20 casements about central C20 door. The fenestration is not symmetrical. Roof is gable-ended and outshots are also gabled. Interiors include plain carpentry detail where exposed. Leacroft Cottage and Spinning Wheel Cottage form an attractive group with the many ether listed buildings along Otterton Fore Street.
