SUTTON BRIDGE TYDD GOTE ROAD TS 42 SE (west side) 5/85 Hydraulic Engine House (formerly listed as part of Cross Keys Bridge) 11/1/80 G.V. II*
Hydraulic engine house. 1897, the machinery by Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co. Ltd. Iron, red brick. Slate roofs. Ribbed iron tower with hipped roof with overhanging eaves. First floor band. 2 storeys, 2 bays. No ground floor openings. Above, 2 glazing bar sashes with flat heads to front and rear with single similar sash to each side wall. To the rear is the red brick range. Moulded brick eaves with large wooden ridge ventilator. Single storey, 3 bays. Single large segmental arched glazing bar fixed light with flush wedge lintel, to the right are 2 segmental arched doorways with plank doors, that on the far right being wider. Rear has 3 similar windows, to the left is a small blocked doorway. The hydraulic plant consists of 3 accumulators with direct-acting double cylinder pumps. The motive power was originally from 2 locomotive type boilers, but they are now replaced by 2 electric motors. This building is connected underground to Cross Keys Bridge, Sutton Bridge, item no. 5/84.
