GV II

House. C17 and early C19, altered and extended in C20. Timber-framed, plastered and weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. C17 main range of 2 bays with early C19 external stack at right end; and original wing of 2 bays to rear left, forming an L-plan. Early C19 adjacent rear wing to right, extending slightly beyond main range. Main range of 2 storeys and attics, rear wings of 2 storeys. C20 single-storey lean-to extensions to right and rear of rear wings, roofed with corrugated red clay tiles. 2-window range of early C18 sashes of 8+8 lights. Off-centre moulded 6-panel door with moulded flat canopy on profiled brackets, all early C19. One stone step. Weatherboarded dado at front and left side, the remainder plastered. All other windows are C20, some being sashes in early C19 style, some casements. C20 half-glazed door to left; C20 6-panel door and glazed door to right. INTERIOR: hardwood frame, unjowled posts, primary straight bracing, all studs jointed and pegged in original part. At time of survey, March 1989, the ground floor had been cleared to form one undivided space (apart from 2 stairs to separate dwellings above) for use as a crafts centre, but disused since 1984. The original stack in the front bay of the left rear wing had been removed, and the middle post of the rear wall severed. Much C20 framing in re-used hardwood had been substituted. Above the ground floor of the front range is an original chamfered transverse beam with lamb's tongue stops, with plain joists of vertical section (some renewed). The rear bay of the original rear wing retains a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, and some original plain joists of vertical section. On the first floor the original structure is undisturbed, with similar chamfered beams, joists plastered to the soffits but probably all original. Both original ranges have clasped purlin roofs with arched collars, undisturbed apart from minor alterations to the attic of the front range. Photographs of c1900 show this house with the original internal stack, and a third stack to the rear of the right wing, the front windows and door as at present, with different windows on the left side. (Daldry J & Hammett B: Blackmore Silver Jubilee: 1977-: 43).
