The Grove GV II House, now subdivided as 2 units. 1840. Timber-framed and
plastered, red brick, ruddled and tuck pointed, stuccoed
detailing, slate roof. Plan irregular L form, principal block
N-S and set back S wing back to back with older parallel range
with right angle E-W wing of lesser proportion. 2 storeys and
basement.
Front W elevation: principal block. 3 window range with piano
nobile and approach steps. Central doorway with ground floor
bay window each side continued down to basement rooms. First
floor windows have moulded stuccoed architraves, stuccoed
string between floors. Bay windows have dentilled cornice with
diagonal consoles and fluted piers. Doorway has deeply
projecting porch with stuccoed dentilled cornice and
pulvinated frieze with Ionic columns and inner pilasters.
Plinth, piers and basement walling all stuccoed. doorway has
semicircular over-light with ornamental glazing, door has
upper glazed panel with margin glazing bars, and lower flush
bead moulded panels. All windows are horned sashes and on
ground and first floor have margin glazing bars, including
return sashes to bay windows. Roof hipped with deep eaves.
Stacks at N and S ends. To S, unit set back, single first
floor window with moulded architrave. Below, large C19
conservatory with swept serpentine roof and 4 C20 restoration
continuous casement windows with glazing bars, each 3x2 panes.
4 stucco moulded recesses in brickwork below.
Rear, E elevation: complex due to C19 addition and late C20
raising of the ground floor to provide a basement. N principal
range timber-framed and pargetted, some old but mainly C20.
Central piano nobile doorway approached by C20 metal steps,
C19 door with 2 upper round headed glazed panels, lower flush
panels, bead moulded. Adjacent to N, C19 3-cant bay, fully
glazed French window with sash side cants, now with guard rail
as basement extended down with C20 sash window. To S of
doorway, C19 sash window with moulded architrave, glazing
bars, 3x4 panes. First floor, 2 C19 sash windows with moulded
architraves, glazing bars, 2x4 panes. Also, 2 semicircular
headed windows, one for stair, one small at S end. Both with
upper radial glazing bars. Basement has C20 door with upper
glazing 2x3 panes and 2 C20 casaement windows. To S, C19 brick
wing to E has 3 first floor `Y' glazed `Gothick' lancet
windows, one 2-light and one long with glazing bars, 4x2
panes. N end, 2 minor hipped additions, lower has C20 door
with upper glazing 2x3 panes and behind, rear brick wall and
end stack of front unit.
N end elevation: front brick unit plain except for string
continued in brick from front. Rear unit set back with small
C19 segment headed attic window. First floor, C20 casement
window 2x3 panes, ground floor C20 lean-tos with single C20
casement window as on first floor. S end elevation: principal
block plain. S wing first floor has C19 sash window 3x4 panes.
C20 shaped barge-boards. C20 ground floor casement window
below brick string. Conservatory rear projects S backed by
brick wall, brick and rendered brick base, serpentine roof
end, C20 restored with multiple panes, wooden glazing bars.
INTERIOR: totally reorganised in C20 restoration and division
into 2 units.
