Town house, now hotel. C16, refronted in the C18.
MATERIALS: stucco on rubble to front; painted rubble to C16 rear wing; asbestos cement slatehanging on modern studwork to rebuilt wing to rear left (NE); steep rag slate roof with deep coved eaves and 3 raking dormers; 21arge rubble lateral stacks at rear of front range; 2 raking dormers with C18 moulded eaves cornices; one parallel rear roof, one at right-angles, the visible roof with two C17 crested clay ridge tiles and gabled dormer breaking the eaves with 6-pane 2-light casement; brick stack to rear gable. PLAN: rectangular plan at the SW frontage to Middle Market Street rebuilt or remodelled in the C18, above possibly earlier cellarage; the property is continued by another single-depth range facing NE onto Higher Market Street; staircase at junction with C 16 rear wing on right; a thick (probably C16) wall divides the front range from a further wing to rear left (NE) which has been completely rebuilt in C20. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with 2nd floor windows breaking eaves; slighdy asyrmnetrical3-window front. Early C19 16-pane hornless sashes to 2nd floor and to ground floor right; taller 18-pane sashes of similar date to 1st floor except that left-hand window is mostly blind; 2 mid C1912-pane sashes left of central doorway with C18 pedimented doorcase with fluted pilasters, modi11ion cornice and panelled reveals and door. Rear: gable end of C16 wing has C17 or earlier small blocked chamfered granite window to 2nd floor left; hornless sashes to ground and 1st-floor left. Original 4-centred arched chamfered granite doorway on the right. The wing to the rear left (NE) has been completely rebuilt in mid C20, with mid C20 sashes and recessed shop front rebuilt in later C20. INTERIOR: C16 features include chamfered oak cross beams andjoists; chamfered granite fireplace with C18 hobs and iron grating (ground floor of rear wing); some visible beams to chamber above and part of rubble winder stair visible up from front cellar. C 17 and C 18 features include oak cross beams and joists to cellar and blocked entrance to.. what is said to be a tunnel to the quay (of unknown date) and unusual open-well staircase with splat balusters of alternate column and twist profile, newel posts rising to cornices and ball finials. Roof structures not inspected but likely to be original i.e. C18 at the front and C16 or C17 to rear wing. The NE (rear left) wing rebuilt in mid C2O, has no features of architectural or historic interest.
