GV II

Tomb to members of the Payton family. c1820. Ashlar. Moulded plinth and edge to top slab. Elizabeth and John Payton, d.1802 and 1818, recorded on south side; William Shakespeare Payton, d.1789, recorded on north side. John Payton was the proprietor of the White Lion hotel, an important coaching inn in the C18 and C19; he (or more probably his father) was one of those who organised the 1769 Shakespeare Jubilee.
