5/49 Birches Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Partly C17 with considerable early to mid-C19 additions and alterations. Purplish-brown brick (probably partly concealing timber frame), plain tile roofs, ridge and end stacks. Earliest part (on south) consists of a short rectangular block with a longer range added later at right angles to rear; further.C19 additions to east. 2 storeys. West front: 3:1 windows with projecting pedimented break (curved and ramped down behind) to right; windows all mid-C20 casements except one glazing bar sash to first floor of pedimented break; entrance (C20 door) in angle between main section and pedimented projection. South front: now bricked up but said formerly to be timber-framed; prominent ridge stack with tall paired shafts, one C20 casement to right. Further single-storeyed C19 additions (including former dairy) to right. Interior: timber frame partly exposed including principal rafters to south gable end of later C17 range; large stone fireplaces to both C17 ranges; moulded and bevelled cross beams with straight-cut chamfer stops.
