War Memorial

II

War memorial. c1920. Sandstone ashlar and white marble. Three steps up to
stone base in the form of a tall chest tomb. Three white marble panels inscribed
with the names of those who died. Cut away corners at the top, and between the
panels, incised decorative foliage motifs. Along the base, inscription FOR GOD
KING AND COUNTRY. Leaning across the steps is a stone wreath flanked by panels
inscribed with the names of those killed in the Second World War. The chest base
has a moulded cornice and supports a sculpture of two soldiers, one standing,
one kneeling, and a machine gun on a tripod base, up which grow oak leaves. The
base of the sculpture inscribed ROLL OF HONOUR/MEN OF/WEST HALLAM WHO SERVED IN
THE GREAT WAR 1914-18.
