ST5675 DOWNLEAZE, Sneyd Park 901-1/31/1788 (South East side) Nos.24 AND 26 and attached front garden walls and piers

Pair of attached houses. c1892. By Henry Dare Bryan. Snecked limestone rubble with limestone and brick dressings, tile-hung brick ridge and gable stacks and a concrete tile half-hipped roof. Double-depth plan. Queen Anne style. Each of 3 storeys; 3-window range. A symmetrical pair has paired gables projecting from the centre, with stone-framed ground-floor mullion and transom casements, and first-floor mullion 9/1-pane sashes. Doorways have cartouches either side and in the lintel, which curves up into the mullion overlights, and battened 2-leaf doors. Bracketed canopies extend either side of the gables, over the doorways, to canted cross-window bays; the gables have 3-light ground- and first-floor windows, tile-hung second floors with canted oriels on brackets, and timber-framed overhanging tops; outer paired first-floor sashes, and shallow dormers. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front garden walls and piers with caps. The early part of a development influenced by Norman Shaw's Bedford Park, 1881.
