Walls and gates enclosing grounds of Methodist church. c1888. By R Curwen. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings; wrought-iron gates. Low walls with chamfered ashlar coping, from which railings have been removed, are interrupted at intervals by wide piers with roll-moulded hipped coping. Wrought-iron gates at entrances to hall and church have scrolled spandrels and decoration, spear-headed dog bars and intermediate bars, and twisted finials to principals. Inserted entrance SE of church has no gates at time of survey. (Milburn G et al: St John's Ashbrooke 1888-1988: Sunderland: 1988-).
