Includes: No.40 HIGH STREET. Two shops and office. 1840-41. Stucco; hipped slate roof with 3 brick cross-axial stacks. Georgian style. 3 storeys; 7-window range, recessed rounded angle and single window range to High Street. Wide eaves soffit on slender paired brackets. Entrance to office to right of centre with 6-panel door; shop front to left extends round angle, with pilasters, deep frieze and cornice, entrance to angle has Ionic columns; plate glass windows and glazed doors; shop front to right is plainer, with central entrance, deep frieze and cornice, entrance to right with half-glazed door. Windows to upper floors have sills, 12-pane sashes to 1st floor, 6-pane sashes to 2nd floor; blind windows to angle. Enriched iron sign bracket to angle lacks sign. The building extends to right as part of Debenhams, Nos 3 & 4 (qv). (Bearman R: Stratford-upon-Avon: A History of its Streets and Buildings: Nelson: 1988-: 62).
