Lee's Rest Houses
GV II
Almshouses, now old people's homes. 1912-15. By TH Hare. For
the trustees of the will of Dr CA Lee. Brick with ashlar
dressings and hipped plain tile roofs. Neo-Georgian style.
Plinth, shallow angle pilasters, dentillated wooden eaves.
Grouped coped brick stacks. Windows are mainly wood mullioned
casements with leaded glazing.
The buildings are arranged on a terrace around a square sunken
garden, with 5 linked residence blocks on east and west sides.
At the north end, a central entrance block flanked by single
residence blocks at right angles, forming an entrance court.
At the south end, a library block facing the lawn and flanked
by residence blocks enclosing rear service yard.
Northern entrance block, 2 storeys; 11-window range. 2 ridge
and 2 side wall stacks. Pedimented central portico with ashlar
Ionic pilasters and round-arched carriage entrance with double
keystone. In the tympanum, an oval cartouche with festoons,
inscribed "Lee's Rest Houses". On either side, a 3-light
window on each floor. Beyond, a recessed bay with a projecting
centre with 2 small windows flanking a blank panel under a
cornice and central pediment. Above and below, a small 3-light
window. On either side, on the ground and first floors, a
round window. Beyond again, projecting end bays with a 3-light
window on each floor. At either end, a low wall with concave
ramped coping, linked to the residence blocks.
Residence blocks facing the entrance court, 2 storeys; 10
window range. Single ridge and 2 side wall stacks. Similar
design to the central block, with a central projection with
two 3-light windows on each floor in place of the portico.
These residence blocks are linked to those flanking the
central lawn by a coped brick boundary wall incorporating a
central semicircular flat-roofed shelter.
On either side of the central lawn, 5 residence blocks, each 2
storeys; 9-window range. 2 side wall and single ridge stacks.
Similar design to the other residence blocks, the fronts
facing outwards. Towards the centre, each block has 2 square
bay windows with 3 lights on each floor, flanked by single
small windows with a doorway below, then similar single-bay
windows. The blocks are linked by single-storey open shelters
with gabled roofs. On the terrace wall, openwork iron lamp
standards.
Library at southern end has flanking residence blocks of the
same design. Single-storey library has a central block with
gabled roof topped with a square domed lantern with a weather
vane. 2 gable stacks. Front has 5 cross casements under a low
crenellated parapet, and at either end, a double doorway with
flanking pilasters. At each end, a slightly recessed hipped
wing with 3 cross casements. Left wing has on 3 sides a box
dormer with a 3-light window, and right wing has a side wall
stack.
INTERIOR: the entrance block contains a replica of a room from
the house of Dr Lee, with original furniture and fittings.
