GV II*

Lock. 1844-49. By IK Brunel. Pennant rubble and ashlar. An inverted elliptical-arched basin with recess and a hinge in S side for the single-leaf wrought-iron caisson gate which sealed the lock, and channels for the hand-operated chains which closed them. The first alteration to Jessop's 1803-9 Cumberland Basin (qv), because the original entrance was too narrow. Now sealed by a concrete wall.
