Former Central Baptist church, now Evangelical church, and adjoining halls. Dated 1904. By George Baines & Son of London. Red brick panelled with flint nodules, moulded brick dressings and slate roof topped with a spired octagonal turret. Free Perpendicular Gothic style. The larger adjoining hall, late C19, was the original church. Plinth, sill band, impost band and hoodmoulds, coped gables and parapets. Windows are mainly Perpendicular lancets with cusped ogee headed lights and panel tracery, in segment-headed openings. Gabled east end, transepts, nave with aisles, south-west tower. Adjoining halls set transversely at east end. East end has 2 segmental pointed single lancets and 2 coped side wall stacks, and on each side a 2-storey stair enclosure with a flat-headed double lancet above and a chamfered doorway below. Transepts have each a large 5-light lancet above and a pair of triple lancets below. South transept has a pair of panelled flanking buttresses with coped segment-arched heads. Aisles have 3 triple lancets to east and a single lancet to west. North aisle has also a double lancet at the west end. Nave west end has a central 5-light lancet with slim flanking buttresses, and above it a pair of small single lancets. Below, a single-storey flat-roofed porch with diagonal buttresses and crenellated parapet. 2 moulded segment-arched recessed doorways with pairs of half-glazed double doors with overlights. On either side, a single lancet. To right, a small battered corner tower with angle buttresses and flat topped pinnacles. Cornice and crenellated parapet, and louvred slit openings to the top stage. On either side of the nave, a large box dormer with 6 lights. Battered south-west tower, 3 stages, has diagonal buttresses, string courses, corbel table with gargoyles, crenellated parapet and pinnacles with caps. Square open wooden bell turret with deep cornice, topped with a leaded spire. At ground level, to west, a canted bay window with 3 double lancets and crenellated parapet. To south, a recessed segment-headed doorway with a pair of half-glazed doors. Second stage has on 3 sides a slit opening with hoodmould. Bell stage has on each side a traceried triple lancet bell opening in a coved segment-headed surround. Outside the west end, a brick and flint boundary wall with brick piers and wavy topped moulded concrete coping. To north, a small iron gate. Smaller hall, adjoining the church, has a coped gable with a 5-light lancet, flanked by link walls with wavy topped copings. To left, a chamfered doorway with a pair of half-glazed doors, and to right, a triple lancet with flat head. Larger hall, to left, is without flint panelling. Coped facing gable with round-arched window above and below, 3 single windows and a doorway, all with round arches. INTERIOR has a false hammerbeam roof with traceried spandrels, and an all-round traceried wooden gallery with rounded corners. Nave has 3-bay arcades with tapered square wooden posts with traceried arch braces to the arcade plate and ornamented iron tie rods. At the front, a moulded 4-centred arch with hoodmould and shaft imposts. On the gallery, a Gothic organ case, and on either side, a half-glazed door. Below, a canted traceried oak pulpit with steps and wrought-iron handrails on each side. The pulpit stands on posts with arch braces which form a canopy over the cruciform marble font. Under the pulpit, a pair of doors set at an angle leading to the font. On either side of the font, a flight of marble steps with wrought-iron handrail. In front of the font, a semicircular dais with integral communion table and wood and iron handrail. At the rear, a patterned stained-glass window and below, a pair of traceried glazed double doors flanked by square stained-glass windows. Transepts also have patterned stained-glass windows, and on their east sides, single doorways. At the west end, entrance lobbies and cloakroom with traceried panelled glazed doors and screens. To south, a stone cantilever dogleg stair with cast-iron handrail. Smaller hall has a traceried arch-braced roof. Larger hall has an arch-braced waggon roof with 4 purlins. At one end, a panelled gallery with turned balustrades, and at the other, a segmental pedimented panel dated 1905. Fittings include curved scroll-ended benches.
