GV II

Terrace of 20 houses along south and east sides of Myddelton Square. 1824-1827. By William Chadwell Mylne, Surveyor to the New River Estate. Yellow stock brick set in Flemish bond with banded stuccco ground-floor (nos. 12A-G rusticated) and stucco dressings; Welsh-slate mansard roof to nos. 12A-G, others obscured by parapets, brick party-wall stacks. Side-hall entrance plan. Four storeys with basement; 2 windows each. Right-hand return wall to nos. 12A-G with one-storey stucco portico entrance which acts as a twin to nos. 11A-D opposite: this is due to the passage that was cut through to the back gardens. Left-hand return wall to no. 30 in Chadwell Street of 3-window range also with portico entrance. Otherwise steps rise to round and elliptical-arched entrance to left: doorway with 1/4 fluted column jambs (nos. 12A-G with flanking stucco pilasters; nos. 18-20 with 1/2 fluted column jambs) carrying corniced-head (nos. 18-20 very fine), fanlight (nos. 13-15, 17-18, 20-21, 23, 27 patterned) and pairs of panelled doors to nos. 18-20, nos. 22-28 original doors. Ground-floor round and elliptical-arched sashes except nos. 12A-G (square-headed) set in stucco recess with panel below (some with margin lights and Gothic style glazing bars). Gauged brick flat-arched mostly 6/6 and 3/3 sashes to upper floors (some French doors). 1st floor stucco sill band beneath full-length sashes set in arched recesses linked by stucco impost bands (except nos. 12A-G) and with iron-bracketed coupled cast-iron balconies with Vitruvian scroll and anthemion (nos.12A-G floral) pattern to railings. Some rebuilding to upper floors; plain brick parapet of various heights (stucco band to nos. 12A-G; brick string course to nos. 22-30) with stone coping. Good attached cast-iron railings with urn finials. This is the largest square in the area aside from Finsbury Square. It is considered by some to be Islington's best and the most important adornment of the New River Estate, and, stylistically, it is the most cohesive in the district. (The Squares of Islington: Cosh, M: The Squares of Islington Part I: Finsbury and Clerkenwell: Islington: 1990-: 59-62).
