SS54NW CHAMBERCOMBE LANE 853-1/2/27 Chambercombe Manor with attached 15/06/51 yard walls (Formerly Listed as: CHAMBERCOMBE LANE Chambercombe Farmhouse with ancillary buildings and yard walls)
II*
Former manor and farmhouse, now a monument open to the public with private accommodation. Possibly C15, built for the Champernon family, much altered in C16, C17 and later. MATERIALS: painted slate rubble; Welsh slate roof. PLAN: originally a 3-room, through-passage plan (with services, substantially rebuilt, to left) and a wing to the rear of the inner room. Principal full-height stone internal partitions. Later extensions including another wing standing forward of hall and upper end. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Hall probably open at first (roof structure not examined, but there appears to be an internal jetty at the lower end). Front: irregular. Hall with large external lateral stack with set-offs and tall shaft with shaped cap. To the left one transomed 2-light window at each level, that to 1st floor under gabled dormer. To right, one 2-light casement window to ground only and a single-storey wing with 4-light window to end wall and reconstructed stack at junction with main range. Service end roof level lower than that to hall (the latter's gable slate-hung); two 2-light gabled dormers over 2-light casement and entrance to right, the latter under pentice. Services with stair turret to rear with small 2-light window, all under catslide; internal lateral stack immediately over tall 2-light window to left. INTERIOR: pegged surround and moulded lintel to passage doorways; passage flagged. Hall with chamfered jetty bressumer, the principal beams chamfered with raised run-outs, the joists also chamfered; fireplace bressumer similarly treated. C17 panelled cupboards with arched tops; lime ash floor. 2 rooms to rear wing, that nearest the hall, presumably a chapel although completely unadorned except for pointed doorway durns, approached by small ante-chamber with timber water stoup. Roof to wing with slightly curved principals and staggered purlins. Roof structure of hall range largely obscured by later ceilings but where visible consists of substantial curved principals that may be jointed crucks. Hall chamber with fragmentary plaster ceiling (frieze with undulating foliated band, and central pendant). Main open-well staircase to rear of services with moulded term balusters. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached wall of slatestone rubble defines courtyard to front of house.
