II

Pair of adjoining houses, No 79 altered to include a shop on the ground floor. Probably 1820s.Stuccoed and blocked out; slate roof; end stacks with brick shafts in party walls. Plan: Double depth, one room wide. The ground drops away to the rear where the houses have an extra storey and rear access with a service yard. Exterior: 3 storeys to the front, 4 to the rear. Each house has a one-window front and deep eaves on elaborately-shaped brackets. Pilaster between the houses (actually on the right end of No 78) has a sunk moulding with an arched head, No 79 has a plain right end pilaster. No 78 has a 5-panel front door with an overlight with geometric glazing bars (matching No 77, q.v.). Windows in the centre, the first floor window re-glazed with a late C19/early C20 2-pane sash with margin panes, second floor window a 3-light casement, 2 panes per light. No 79 preserves its original windows on the first and second floor: a 12-pane sash and 3/6-pane sash. The ground floor has a C20 plate glass shop window canted in towards a door at the right. Both houses have small round-headed rear stair windows, No 78 with stained glass. Interior: Not inspected but features of interest likely to survive. Group value with listed buildings on both sides of the High Street. The tall rear elevations, overlooking small gardens and a service area paved with irregular volcanic trap stones, contributes to an attractive urban group.
