Park gateway and adjoining old people's homes. Dated 1909. By JH Hirst, City Architect. Cast-iron gates with wrought-iron decoration, almshouses brick with ashlar dressings and plain tile roofs. Pair of square openwork cast-iron gatepiers with cornices and wrought-iron finials, with central pair of scroll top iron gates. On either side, a railing with smaller openwork piers, with segment-headed gate under a crest. Beyond, 3 sections of lower railing, then a round-arched gate with crest. On either side, a block of 6 almshouses set at a slight angle. Single storey; 6 window range. Plinth and 3 coped square ridge stacks. In the centre, a parapeted triple bay with a central triangular pediment and below it, a shaped panel inscribed "Pickering Rest Homes". 2 close boarded doors flanked by 4-light stone mullioned glazing bar windows. Beyond, a loggia with 2 round-arched openings, covering two 2-light windows and 2 doors. Beyond again, 2 doors flanked by single projecting through-eaves dormers with massive coped gables and 4-light mullioned windows. At either end, a round-arched opening covering a 2-light window and door.
