TQ 2880 NW and NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER CARLOS PLACE W1 69/63; 68/2 Connaught Hotel GV II

Built as the Coburg Hotel. 1894-96 by Lewis Isaacs and H L Florence. Red brick with lavish stone dressings, slate roof. Free Jacobean-Renaissance style. Five storeys, basement and gabled attics with later dormers inserted. Four bay pavilions to Carlos Place and to Mount Street and wide slightly recessed quadrant centre block of 11 bays to corner. Stone mullioned-transomed flat arched windows, with sash lights, stone panelled aprons. Balustraded stone entrance porch with early C20 projecting iron and glass canopy. Four storey canted stone mullioned bay window, with balustraded parapet, terminating Carlos Place pavilion. Band courses and sill courses and above main course sections of balustrade between dormers and gables. Heavy balustraded and bracketed balconies on first and second floors. Stone area parapet pierced with sections of balustrading. Part of the 1880s-90s rebuilding of Mount Street for the Grosvenor Estate. Prominent corner site.
