Large house now doctors' and dentists' surgeries. c1900. Red
brick with ashlar sandstone dressings, graduated slate roof. 3
storeys; 3-bay entrance front to Duke Street, angled
corner-bay on left and 2-bay left return having 2-storey,
2-bay wing on its left. Asymmetrical.
Mostly mullioned and transomed windows with plain sashes set
behind the transoms. Entrance front: moulded plinth; bay 2
projects and bay 3 breaks forward further, both are gabled.
Bay-2 porch has moulded, quoined doorway with 3 round-arched
transom lights under basket arch with hoodmould and carved
stops; small round-arched window to right and ashlar offsets
over. Ovolo-moulded, 3-light stair-window above has 2
transoms, stained glass and arched lights beneath segmental
arch with keystone and hoodmould. Bay 1 has segmentally-arched
sash with hoodmould to ground and 1st floors. Bay 3 has
2-storey, cavetto-moulded, canted bay-window of 1:2:1 lights
with transoms; cornice with fleurons beneath parapet with
blind, pointed arches.
2nd floor: bay 1 is blind; bay 2 with cross-window having
arched lights and hoodmould under relieving arch; bay 3 with
transomed 3-light window having hoodmould with carved stops
and finial. Moulded eaves cornice over bay 1. Corner bay:
large, curved oriel window with ashlar corbelling, sunken
apron panels and cornice surmounted by pierced parapet;
cross-window above. Gables to corner bay, bay 2 and bay 3 have
shaped kneelers, moulded ashlar gable copings and finials;
gables of bays 2 & 3 also have slits.
Hipped roof with terracotta ridges and finials. Single-flue
stack to ridge on left; multiple-flue stacks to left-return
ridge and right end; the stacks have panelled shafts. Left
return is plainer; small gable above 2 cross-windows set
between ashlar shafts.
INTERIOR: lobby doors with coloured, leaded glass. Stair hall:
small corner fireplace with canopy; embossed dado depicting
pot plants; staircase has fluted and panelled newels with
finials; stained, square rods to oak handrail. 3 ground-floor
doorways with architraves and brattished cornices, 2 have
9-panel doors and pointed recesses over. 2 pointed arches on
landing; panelled ceiling with moulded ribs. Staircase to 2nd
floor has slender, turned balusters. Not shown on 1895 OS map
but likely to have been built soon after.
