Attached house. 1760. By William Paty. Limestone ashlar, rubble basement, roof not visible. Double-depth plan. Mid Georgian style. 3 storeys and basement; 3-window range. A rusticated ground floor to a plat band, pilasters to a cornice and parapet. Good left-hand semicircular-arched doorway has incised voussoirs, slim fluted columns to the transom, an 8-light fanlight and 6-panel door; incised voussoirs to the ground-floor, to 6/6-pane sashes, smaller on the second floor; C20 basement windows. DEVON HOUSE is inscribed in the plat band. In the left return is a semicircular-arched stair window with interlacing and etched glass. Single-storey brick block to the left has 1-window range, a cornice and parapet, 5 stepped vousoirs to 6/6-pane sash, and steps down in the front area to a C20 door. INTERIOR: entrance hall with arched recesses flanking a semicircular niche, a central lateral open-well stair with a curtail, slender column balusters, ramped and wreathed rail with cross banding, 6-panel doors, panelled shutters and cornices. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached cast-iron front area railings and gates have urn finials. (Mellor P: A Kingsdown Collection: Bristol: 1987-: 75).
