Statue. 1872. Sculptor M Noble of London; stonework by MacDonald Field and Co of Aberdeen and London. Bronze on granite pedestal and limestone stylobate. Stepped base to square pedestal inscribed: 'IN HONOR/ OF/ SIR JAMES RAMSDEN/ FIRST MAYOR OF THIS BOROUGH/ ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ 1872'. Bas-relief on left side depicts rural Barrow in 1846 whilst that on right shows industrial scene of 1871; dentilled cornice. The statue faces north along Abbey Road: Ramsden in mayoral robes and chain holds a chart of Barrow Port. Unveiled 1872 by the Duke of Devonshire. The statue cost »1,500 and the granite »500. Ramsden arrived with the railway in 1846, planned the new town and co-founded the Barrow Shipbuilding Co Ltd. Centrepiece of Ramsden Square. (Barrow in Furness, Almanack and Tide Table: Barrow in Furness: 1886-: 64).
